Workplace Fatalities Continue in Turkey: 4 Workers Dead, 15 Injured in 24 Hours

In just the last 24 hours, four workers died and at least 15 were injured in accidents across various sectors, including construction, mining, and municipal services. This grim picture underscores the dire consequences of serious negligence and a lack of oversight in Turkey's occupational health and safety sector.

Electrocution: Two Separate Fatalities

Two workers lost their lives in separate incidents in Uşak and Samsun while performing electrical work. In Uşak's Eşme district, 27-year-old Mustafa Duman, a worker for an electricity distribution company, was severely injured after being electrocuted on a lighting pole he was climbing to perform a repair. Despite all medical efforts, the young worker could not be saved. A similar incident occurred in Samsun, where Murat Ak, a municipal sanitation worker, was electrocuted on an electrical pole and died. Both cases are tragic proof of the insufficient safety measures for workers dealing with electricity.

Deaths and Injuries in Construction and Mining

Construction and mining, two of the sectors with the highest rates of worker fatalities, were once again in the news with reports of deaths. In Maraş's Türkoğlu district, 34-year-old Sinan Kılıç, a mine worker, was killed in a workplace fatality. His body was found after he was reported missing by his relatives, having been crushed between a pickup truck and construction materials. In İzmir's Ödemiş district, 56-year-old Yılmaz Kıran died on a construction site after a runaway panel van pinned him underneath.

Another notable accident occurred in Bursa, where a crane operator was critically injured after the tower crane he was operating at a construction site collapsed. The operator's life remains in danger. The fact that workers had previously warned management about the crane's old age and lack of safety measures strengthens the claim that this was not an accident but a case of manslaughter due to negligence.

Industrial Explosions and Road Accidents: Endemic Hazards

In addition to the fatalities, various workplace accidents resulted in 15 injured workers. An explosion in the garden of a chemical factory in Malatya's Yeşilyurt district injured three workers. The injured were taken to the hospital, and the area was closed to traffic due to the risk of another explosion. In Kocaeli's Gebze district, a shuttle bus transporting workers collided with a car, injuring 10 people in total, including seven workers.

These tragic reports from across Turkey once again reveal that worker safety remains a secondary concern and that inspections are woefully inadequate. This situation demonstrates the urgent need for a systemic change to prevent the hundreds of worker deaths that occur each year.
