6.1 Magnitude Earthquake in Balıkesir Sındırgı: No Fatalities, Previously Damaged Buildings Collapsed

BALIKESİR – An earthquake measuring 6.1 in magnitude struck the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir on October 28, 2025, at 08:49. The tremor was felt across a wide area in the Marmara and Aegean regions, including Istanbul. According to AFAD data, the earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 5.99 kilometers.

Following the earthquake, a brief panic occurred in the region. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that there were no fatalities but that 3 buildings and 1 shop had collapsed. It was determined that these structures were previously damaged in earlier earthquakes and had been evacuated. Minister Yerlikaya also stated that no debris was found in the 75 villages scanned in rural areas.

Those Injured Due to Panic Have Been Discharged

Minister Yerlikaya reported that 3 citizens were slightly injured due to panic during the earthquake. Furthermore, Minister Memişoğlu announced that 26 people injured in the earthquake had been discharged.

Collapsed Structures and Precautions

In Sındırgı, two buildings on Akhisar Street and one building in Cumhuriyet Square were completely destroyed. The buildings on Akhisar Street were reportedly sealed due to damage sustained in previous earthquakes. The two-story building in Cumhuriyet Square contained 3 shops on the ground floor, while the upper floors were used as storage.

Balıkesir Governor İsmail Ustaoğlu shared a message stating that all teams were swiftly directed to the region and that no adverse reports had come from the villages. District Governor Doğukan Koyuncu also confirmed no loss of life and that field screening efforts were ongoing.

Minister Yerlikaya warned citizens to absolutely not enter risky buildings. In Balıkesir province, schools were closed for one day as a precautionary measure. Additionally, it was announced that there were no power outages in the region, and mosques and schools were kept open for citizens.
