Tragedy in Urfa: 14-Year-Old Syrian Child Worker Dies After Falling from 5th Floor of Construction Site

A 14-year-old Syrian child laborer, identified as Mustafa, tragically lost his life after falling from the 5th floor of a construction site where he was working as a formworker in the Karaköprü district of Şanlıurfa. The Health and Safety Labor Watch (İSİG) Council reported that this is the 71st child worker death recorded this year. The Urfa Bar Association Labor Commission fiercely reacted to the incident, stating: “Child labor is not destiny; it is negligence.”

Another Young Life Lost to Construction Site Negligence in Karaköprü

The fatal incident occurred around 11:00 AM in the Batıkent Neighborhood of Karaköprü, a central district of Urfa. According to reports, Mustafa, a 14-year-old Syrian worker, fell to the ground from the fifth floor of the construction site where he was employed. The child worker died at the scene, and his body was subsequently taken to the morgue for examination.

This deeply distressing event has once again brought the critical issues of child labor and workplace fatalities to the forefront in Turkey. Urfa Bar Association Slams Incident: "Child Labor is Negligence"

In response to the workplace fatality, the Urfa Bar Association Labor Commission issued a strongly worded written statement, calling on authorities to take immediate action.

In its statement, the Commission emphasized the prevalence of child labor and its mortal risks, noting:

• "This painful incident has once again revealed how widespread and fatal child labor remains in our country."

• "The employment of children under the age of 15 is strictly forbidden by our laws."

• "However, economic difficulties, lack of inspection, and irresponsibility are costing children their lives."

The Commission stressed that this situation, which is in clear violation of labor laws, stems from a chain of economic pressures, insufficient auditing, and negligence. They further asserted that such tragedies can only be prevented through effective supervision and deterrent sanctions.

The construction industry remains one of the sectors with the highest rates of workplace fatalities in Turkey. The inherent necessity for working at heights, coupled with inadequate safety measures and intense work schedules, poses deadly risks, especially for children.
