Oxygen Tank Explosion at Body Shop in Mersin: 5 Workers, Including 3 Children, Injured

MERSIN – An oxygen tank explosion at a body shop in Mersin's Bozyazı district has resulted in injuries to five workers, three of whom are children. The injured individuals, who sustained second-degree burns, were transported to the hospital.

The incident occurred at a body shop owned by A.Ö. in the Merkez Mahallesi of Bozyazı district, for reasons yet unknown. According to information received, an oxygen tank being used at the workshop exploded with a loud noise due to an unspecified cause.

Upon hearing the blast and noticing the incident, nearby citizens immediately reported the situation, leading to the rapid deployment of numerous health, fire, and police teams to the area.

The workers injured in the explosion – identified as M.T. (16), İ.Y. (17), E.Y. (20), M.Ş. (21), and M.S. (16) – received initial medical attention from health teams at the scene before being swiftly transported to Bozyazı State Hospital. It was learned that the injured sustained second-degree burns on their bodies. Following their initial treatment, they were reportedly transferred to Anamur State Hospital due to the severity of their conditions.

Firefighting teams that arrived at the scene conducted extensive cooling operations in and around the workshop where the explosion occurred, to prevent any potential fire risk.

Police teams secured the area and launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion. The inquiry will also focus on the adequacy of safety measures at the workshop and the presence of child workers.
