Alarming Picture for Turkish Youth: We Are European Champions in NEET Rate!
According to Eurostat data, Turkey became the country with the highest NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) rate in Europe with 26.4%. This rate, which is 2.4 times the EU average, reveals youth unemployment and problems in education.
Eurostat Data Reveals Shocking Reality:
An alarming picture has emerged regarding Turkey's young population. According to the latest data published by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat), Turkey ranks first among European countries in the rate of young people who are "Not in Education, Employment, or Training" (NEET).
Highest Rate Among EU Countries is in Turkey:
According to Eurostat data, 26.4% of young people (aged 15-29) in Turkey are neither continuing their education nor are they employed in any job. This rate places Turkey in the position of having by far the highest NEET rate among European Union (EU) member and candidate countries.
Comparative Data Shows the Severity of the Situation:
After Turkey, the other European countries with the highest NEET rates are listed as Romania (14.5%), Italy (15.2%), and Serbia (14.9%). Even the rates of these countries remain almost half the level of Turkey's rate.
At the other end of the list are countries that are successful in keeping their young people in education or employment. The four European countries with the lowest NEET rates are, respectively, the Netherlands (4.9%), Iceland (5%), Sweden (6.3%), and Norway (6.8%).
Turkey's Rate is 2.4 Times the EU Average:
The average NEET rate for EU member countries is 11%. Turkey's rate of 26.4% is 2.4 times this average, further highlighting the severity of the situation.
A high NEET rate is considered an indicator of many factors such as youth unemployment, problems in the education system, lack of vocational skills, insufficiencies in the labor market, and social exclusion. The high rate of young people who are not in education or employment creates significant challenges both in terms of the loss of individual potential and for the country's economy and social structure.
These data, published according to the report prepared by DİSK (Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions of Turkey) Research Center, once again reveal that Turkey needs to take urgent steps regarding youth employment and education.
