ANKARA/MAMAK – A horrifying workplace accident claimed the lives of two construction workers in Ankara’s Mamak district after the cargo lift they were using on the 12th floor of a 15-story building split apart, causing them to fall to their deaths. The tragic event has once again cast a severe spotlight on critical occupational health and safety (OHS) failures within Turkey’s massive construction sector.

Disaster Strikes on the 12th Floor

The incident occurred in the morning hours at an ongoing construction site in the Ege Neighborhood of Mamak. The lift, which was transporting workers on the 12th floor, suddenly and for an undetermined reason fractured into two pieces.

This catastrophic failure resulted in the two workers plunging from a significant height, killing them instantly at the scene.

Emergency medical (112) and police teams were swiftly dispatched to the area. Following initial examination, health teams confirmed the workers' fatalities.

Construction Halted, Judicial Investigation Launched

In the wake of the fatal incident, Mamak Municipality teams arrived at the site and immediately halted all construction work. Police have launched a broad judicial investigation to determine why the lift malfunctioned and to ascertain whether technical negligence or lack of maintenance contributed to the double fatality.

Accidents involving construction lifts and cranes are frequently cited as grim reminders of the inadequate supervision concerning equipment maintenance, periodic safety checks, and secure working practices on building sites. Authorities are currently working to officially identify the two deceased workers as the investigation into the exact cause of the accident proceeds.
