Women working in greenhouses in Antalya say they are forced to continue working even on March 8, International Women’s Day, due to financial hardship, low wages and harsh working conditions.
Many women employed in the agricultural greenhouses of the region stated that they cannot afford to take a day off despite the symbolic importance of the day. They emphasized that the rising cost of living and economic pressures leave them with no alternative but to keep working.
Female workers explained that their daily routines involve long hours of labor under difficult conditions, often for low pay. According to the workers, the workload in greenhouses is physically demanding and frequently extends throughout the day.
Some of the women noted that while International Women’s Day is widely celebrated around the world, for them it passes like any other working day. They stressed that economic necessity forces them to remain at work rather than participate in events or demonstrations marking the day.
Workers also highlighted broader problems faced by women in the agricultural sector, including job insecurity, limited social protections and inadequate wages. They said these issues make it difficult to achieve a decent standard of living.
For many of the women, March 8 serves as a reminder not only of the global struggle for women’s rights but also of the continuing challenges faced by female laborers in agriculture.
