The deaths of a Syrian agricultural worker mother and her five children in a container fire in Antalya’s Kepez district have once again drawn attention to the extreme vulnerability of seasonal agricultural workers in Turkey.
Living and working conditions for these workers — who number in the hundreds of thousands — remain largely unchanged despite official circulars and parliamentary inquiries. They are widely considered one of the most disadvantaged labor groups in the country.
Seasonal agricultural workers often reside in makeshift shelters such as tents or containers, which are highly susceptible to fires. These structures frequently lack basic safety measures, including proper electrical infrastructure and fire prevention systems, significantly increasing the risk of fatal incidents.
Experts and labor advocates point out that poverty, inadequate housing conditions, and a lack of effective oversight are the primary factors contributing to these tragedies. Overcrowded living spaces, unsafe heating methods, and the absence of regular inspections further exacerbate the risks.
Additionally, many of these workers are migrants or refugees, which places them in an even more precarious position, limiting their access to social protections and safe living standards.
Critics argue that despite recurring fatal incidents, structural problems remain unresolved, and meaningful improvements to working and living conditions have yet to be implemented.
