The reaction against the bonus system is growing as Samsung workers organized a rally accompanied by a strike warning.
Thousands of workers gathered at Samsung’s semiconductor complex in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, protesting what they describe as an unfair bonus system and demanding more transparent compensation policies. Union representatives stated that the current system creates a significant pay gap, particularly when compared to rival company SK Hynix, whose employees reportedly receive substantially higher bonuses.
Workers called for the removal of the cap on performance bonuses, a 7 percent increase in base salaries, and a system in which a larger share of annual operating profits would be distributed to employees as bonuses. They also rejected management’s proposal involving restricted stock compensation, arguing that it fails to address their immediate economic concerns.
Union officials warned that if negotiations with management do not produce satisfactory results, they are prepared to launch an 18-day strike beginning on May 21. They emphasized that the protest is not only about wages, but also about dignity, fairness, and workers’ right to receive a just share of the company’s growing profits driven by the AI chip boom.
The demonstration marked one of the largest labor mobilizations in Samsung’s recent history, reflecting rising labor tensions and growing pressure on management amid ongoing collective bargaining negotiations.
