Doruk Mining workers who wanted to march to the Ministry of Energy were blocked by the police in Ankara.
The workers, members of the Independent Mine Workers’ Union, have been protesting for days to demand the payment of their unpaid wages and severance entitlements. After arriving in Ankara following a long march from Eskişehir, they attempted to walk from Kurtuluş Park to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources in order to make their demands heard directly.
Police units prevented the workers from continuing their march and intervened during the protest. Reports stated that pepper spray was used against the miners, leading to tense moments at the scene. Workers reacted by shouting, “Pepper spray for those asking for bread,” emphasizing their anger over the intervention.
During the police intervention, several workers reportedly felt unwell, and some were taken to hospital. Union representatives stressed that their struggle is about basic labor rights and dignity, insisting that they would continue their resistance until their wages and legal entitlements were fully paid.
The incident once again drew attention to the broader labor struggle of miners and the challenges workers face while seeking justice for unpaid labor and compensation.
