Turkey Mourns: 10 Heroes Martyred in Eskişehir Forest Fire

Eskişehir – A devastating forest fire that has raged for days in Eskişehir's Seyitgazi district has plunged Turkey into mourning. Ten members of the 24-person firefighting team, including 5 forest workers and 5 AKUT volunteers, lost their lives battling the flames. This tragic incident has once again highlighted the immense risks faced by those fighting wildfires.

24-Person Team Trapped by Flames

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı confirmed the tragedy, stating, "24 of our personnel were suddenly caught in the fire as it changed direction. Unfortunately, we lost 10 of our citizens. This great sorrow has deeply wounded all of us." The sudden shift in the fire's course led to an unexpected and perilous situation even for experienced teams.

Identities of Martyrs Released, Bodies Sent to Forensic Medicine

The identities of the fallen forest heroes and AKUT volunteers have been confirmed as: Sercan Utmi, Hilmi Şahin, Eyip Dereli, Tolunay Kocaman, Enes Kızılyel, Muharrem Can, İlker Onarıcı, Tekin Enes Sarıyıldız, Bayram Eren Arslan, and Alperen Özcan. Their bodies were transported from Afyonkarahisar State Hospital to the Ankara Forensic Medicine Institute for identification and DNA analysis. Families and AKUT volunteers gathered outside the institute, overcome with grief.

AKUT's Emotional Farewell Message

AKUT Search and Rescue Association expressed its profound sorrow in a message for its martyred volunteers: "Our esteemed martyrs; Alperen Özcan, Bayram Esen Arslan, İlker Onarıcı, Muharrem Can, and Tekin Enes Sarıyıldız, bravely sacrificed their lives protecting our country's forests, our green homeland. Each of them was a highly valued member of our AKUT family and a true hero of this land."

One Injured in Critical Condition, Investigation Launched

Minister of Health Kemal Memişoğlu announced that while six of the seven injured individuals are in good condition, one forest worker remains in intensive care. "We have mobilized all our resources," he added. Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç stated that an investigation has been launched by the Eskişehir and Afyonkarahisar Chief Public Prosecutor's Offices into the fire. The cause of the fire, including any potential negligence or sabotage, is being thoroughly investigated.
