"Green Homeland" Ablaze: Latest on Forest Fires in Bursa, Karabük, and Kahramanmaraş

Turkey – As scorching temperatures intensify across Turkey in July, the nation continues its relentless battle against widespread forest fires. Extensive forested areas in Bursa, Karabük, and Kahramanmaraş are particularly affected. Firefighting teams are working tirelessly, both from the ground and air, to bring the blazes under control. Dozens of neighborhoods have been evacuated, with hundreds of vehicles and thousands of personnel deployed to the fire zones.

Bursa: Orhaneli and Harmancık Engulfed in Flames

A devastating fire that originated in Yakuplar Neighborhood of Orhaneli district, Bursa, has spread to Harmancık district due to strong winds, severely threatening the natural landscape of "Green Bursa." Teams from the Regional Directorate of Forestry and fire brigades are battling the blaze, while local residents are also providing crucial support with their own water tankers.

Thick smoke from the fires has blanketed the skies over Bursa, making them appear hazy. As a precautionary measure, numerous rural neighborhoods in Orhaneli and Harmancık districts have been evacuated. The Orhaneli-Harmancık highway, which was temporarily closed for safety, has been reopened to traffic under controlled conditions. Authorities have detained one individual in connection with the fire.

Karabük: Safranbolu Fire Continues on its 5th Day

In Karabük's UNESCO World Heritage city, Safranbolu, a fire that began on July 23 in the Cemetery area of Çavuşlar village is still raging on its 5th day. So far, 18 villages and 50 neighborhoods have been evacuated. Firefighting teams are in a race against time to bring the flames completely under control.

The efforts to extinguish the fire involve 14 helicopters, 1 aircraft, and 1,225 personnel. Ground and air vehicles, supported by teams from neighboring provinces, are actively engaged in the field. The Karabük-Ankara highway has been reopened to traffic under controlled conditions due to fire safety concerns.

Kahramanmaraş: A New Fire Challenge After the Earthquakes

Kahramanmaraş, still reeling from the devastating February 6 earthquakes, is now grappling with a major forest fire. The blaze, which started two days ago in the rural area of Çamlıbel Neighborhood in Onikişubat district, has spread across a vast area.

Over 600 personnel, 6 helicopters, 17 fire trucks, 38 water tenders, 10 water tanks, and 15 construction machines are involved in the firefighting operations. Support teams from neighboring provinces such as Şanlıurfa, Adıyaman, Kayseri, Gaziantep, Osmaniye, and Konya are also working intensely to prevent the fire from spreading further. This situation underscores the immense challenges the region faces in its successive struggles with natural disasters.

24/7 Efforts for the "Green Homeland" and Ongoing Investigations

A comprehensive nationwide effort to combat forest fires continues non-stop, spearheaded by the General Directorate of Forestry, with support from AFAD, gendarmerie, municipalities, and non-governmental organizations. Investigations into the causes of the fires are ongoing, and several suspects have been taken into custody. Authorities are urging citizens to be vigilant and cooperative against fire risks. Efforts to protect the "Green Homeland" are being carried out 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
