In a tragic work accident in Istanbul, 25-30 year old construction worker Mazlum Deniz from Diyarbakır Kulp died after falling from a height. The incident reignites debates on occupational safety in Türkiye's construction sector.
Istanbul - In a tragic work accident at a construction site in Istanbul, Mazlum Deniz, a young construction worker aged 25-30 from Kurudere (Xirabê Zengê) Village in Kulp, Diyarbakır, lost his life after falling from a height. The death of the young worker plunged his family and hometown into mourning, once again bringing the critical issue of occupational safety in the construction sector to the forefront.
Mazlum Deniz, one of thousands of workers who travel from rural areas to Istanbul for work, faced one of the harsh realities of the construction sector yesterday. The young worker, who was in the early stages of his career and had dreams for the future, died after falling from a height due to an unfortunate accident at the construction site where he was employed. Despite all interventions by health and safety teams who arrived at the scene, Deniz could not be saved. The news of his passing deeply saddened his loved ones and especially his hometown of Diyarbakır.
The news of Mazlum Deniz's death, originally from Kurudere (Xirabê Zengê) Village in Diyarbakır's Kulp district, came as a great shock to his family and the village community. It was learned that his family and relatives have set off for Istanbul, and the young worker's body is expected to be taken to his hometown for burial after autopsy procedures. Mazlum Deniz's sudden departure created a profound atmosphere of mourning throughout the entire village.
This accident, which resulted in Mazlum Deniz's death, once again highlighted the inadequacy of occupational health and safety measures in Türkiye's construction sector, one of the country's most hazardous industries. The question of to what extent necessary inspections and preventive measures are implemented in construction sites, where similar accidents frequently occur, has resurfaced. Experts emphasize that to prevent occupational accidents, it is crucial not only to have legal regulations but also to enhance safety awareness within the construction site culture, intensify worker training, and conduct effective inspections.
Mazlum Deniz's loss, in addition to the void left behind by every young worker who dies prematurely, once again reminded us of the urgent need for improvements in the sector. We extend our condolences to his family and all his loved ones.
