Two workers died in Hatay, Antakya, after a trench collapse during wastewater infrastructure work. An investigation has been launched to examine occupational safety negligence and the circumstances of this tragic workplace fatality.
HATAY – A tragic collapse during wastewater infrastructure work in Hatay's Antakya district, Dikmece neighborhood, has claimed the lives of two workers. In the morning incident, the two laborers working in the trench were buried under tons of soil. This tragic event once again brought to the forefront the critical importance of occupational safety standards and fueled discussions around "workplace fatalities."
According to information obtained, a trench collapse suddenly occurred during wastewater infrastructure project works in Dikmece Neighborhood, Antakya district, reportedly under the Hatay Metropolitan Municipality. Two workers, who were operating in the narrow and deep excavation area at the time of the collapse, became trapped under the debris.
Upon noticing the situation, other workers, in shock and panic, immediately alerted emergency services. 112 Emergency Health, AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Authority), and gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the scene. Responding teams raced against time to rescue the workers trapped under the earth. After prolonged efforts, the two workers were extracted severely injured and immediately rushed to the nearest hospital. However, despite all interventions, the unfortunate laborers could not be saved and succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
Following the incident, the Hatay Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched a comprehensive investigation to shed light on all aspects of the tragedy and identify those responsible. It was reported that issues such as whether necessary safety precautions were taken at the construction site, the adequacy of soil surveys, and excavation techniques will be thoroughly examined.
This painful incident once again highlighted the reality of frequent work accidents and workplace fatalities in Turkey. Trade unions and civil society organizations called for increased occupational safety inspections and the implementation of deterrent penalties to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
