A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Muğla, Turkey, on June 3, 2025. One person died due to panic, and 69 were injured. Officials confirm no structural damage, with AFAD field assessments ongoing.
MUĞLA, Turkey – A 5.8 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Marmaris, Muğla, early on June 3, 2025. While the tremor was felt in surrounding provinces, it tragically led to one fatality and 69 injuries, primarily due to panic. The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) reported that field assessment efforts are ongoing.
The earthquake struck off the coast of Muğla's Marmaris district at 02:17 local time on June 3, 2025. According to AFAD data, the earthquake's depth was measured at 67.91 kilometers. The tremor was felt across several neighboring provinces, including İzmir, Aydın, Manisa, Denizli, and Antalya.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, in a statement made via social media, reported that initial assessments indicated no structural damage to residential areas following the earthquake. However, it was tragically announced that a 14-year-old citizen named Afranur Günlü in Fethiye district lost her life after suffering a panic attack, despite medical interventions at the hospital.
Minister Yerlikaya further stated that a total of 69 individuals sought medical assistance due to jumping from heights or experiencing panic. Of these, 14 were treated on site, 8 were discharged after outpatient treatment, and 46 individuals are currently continuing their treatment in hospitals.
Marmaris Mayor Acar Ünlü confirmed that the earthquake was felt intensely in the district and that teams are continuing their field assessment work. Muğla Governor İdris Akbıyık also noted that there was no destruction across the city, but 69 citizens were affected by panic.
AFAD, in its own statement, posted: "Following the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred off Marmaris, Muğla in the Mediterranean, there is currently no adverse situation reported. Field assessment efforts are continuing."
Authorities urged citizens to remain calm and to follow information from official sources.
